A Monday Morning Devotional – The Narrow Gate and Hard Road of Christianity
“For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:14, NRSVUE).
Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy. In fact, He tells us plainly that the road leading to life is hard. These words are not meant to discourage us but to prepare us. The Christian life is not a casual journey or one that can be lived on our own terms. It is a life of daily surrender, trusting Christ even when obedience is costly.
Conversely, worldly wisdom pundits tell us that there are multiple paths that lead to Heaven like a mountain with many winding trails but all lead to the summit. Jesus, however, says there is only one such path.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6, NSRVUE).
So, Jesus’s use of the metaphor, “narrow gate,” is yet another way to remind us that true spiritual life, eternal life, comes only through Him. He invites all people to give up self-reliance, drop their self-pride, abandon surface-level religion, and put their whole trust in Him. It requires humility, admitting mistakes, and trusting in God’s grace. Yet, the journey will change a person from the inside out, or said differently, transform him or her. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us what this looks like in daily life: choosing forgiveness over revenge, generosity over selfishness, purity over compromise, and love—even for people who dislike us. However, we cannot do this on our own. We must have the Holy Spirit working within us to make it possible.
When Jesus says that “there are few who find it,” He is not inviting us to speculate about numbers. Rather, He is urging each of us to respond personally to His invitation. We cannot follow Him simply because our family does, because we attend church, or because we “go along” and be part of the “accepted” crowd. Each person must choose whether to enter through the narrow gate and continue walking the road of discipleship, or not.
There will be moments when the journey feels lonely. We may be misunderstood, ridiculed, or tempted to abandon the path for one that appears easier. Yet, Christ never asks us to walk alone. He goes before us, walks beside us, and strengthens us through the Holy Spirit. The road may be hard, but its destination is life—an abundant life now and an eternal life in the presence of Him.
Today, we must ask ourselves what path we are on and which gate we want to go through. The narrow gate and tough road may requires some sacrifices along the way, but it is the only road that ends in everlasting joy.
Prayer
Gracious God, thank You for calling me to the narrow gate that leads to life. Give me the faith to trust in Jesus Christ alone and the courage to follow Him even when the road is difficult. Transform my heart so that my life reflects Your love, mercy, and holiness. Strengthen me through Your Holy Spirit to remain faithful each day, keeping my eyes fixed on Christ until I reach the fullness of life in Your eternal kingdom. Amen.
