Be Still and Wait Patiently: A Devotional on Psalm 37:7
Scripture:
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! (Psalms 37:7, ESV).
David knew this exact frustration when he penned Psalm 37. He looked around and saw people taking unethical shortcuts, stepping over others, and using questionable tactics—yet somehow thriving. In response to that internal panic, God didn’t offer a quick-fix strategy. Instead, He commanded something that runs completely counter to human nature: stop striving and rest.
The Hebrew root for “be still” in Psalm 37:7 means to rest, keep silent, or release control. It is an invitation to take your hands off the steering wheel of your life and let God lead.
The Power of Waiting
Waiting on God is not passive resignation, nor is it wasted time. It is an active posture of faith. When you choose to be still and wait patiently, you declare that God’s timing is superior to your personal agenda and that His character is more reliable than your need for control.
This posture of expectant waiting echoes throughout the rest of Scripture:
- Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” The waiting period isn’t meant to drain you; it is designed to replenish you.
- Lamentations 3:25-26: “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” God rewards the heart that refuses to rush ahead of His grace.
When we combine these promises, a clear truth emerges: waiting is the soil where deep faith grows. If we constantly engineer our own timing, we miss out on seeing God move on our behalf.
3 Ways to Practice Stillness Today
- Silence the Noise: Set aside 10 to 15 minutes today without your phone or background noise. Practice sitting in quiet prayer, handing over the worries you’ve been carrying.
- Stop Comparing Timelines: When you see someone else achieving what you are praying for, treat it as a reminder that God is at work, not that you’ve been forgotten.
- Release the Steering Wheel: Identify one specific area where you are trying to force a result, and intentionally surrender that outcome to God.
A Prayer for Stillness
Lord, my heart gets restless when I see others moving ahead while I feel held back. Forgive me for measuring Your goodness by my own rushed schedule. Today, I choose to be still and wait patiently for You. Quiet my anxious thoughts, help me stop striving, and teach me to rest in Your perfect timing and unfailing strength. Amen.
