Unwearied Faith: Why Doing Good Matters When You’re Exhausted
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9, ESV).
Doing Good
In Galatians, “doing good” touches every part of daily life. It ranges from simple acts—like sharing a kind word with a stranger or offering a patient reply to a tired colleague—to grueling, unseen sacrifices that demand everything we have to give. Regardless of the effort required, genuine goodness is never a check-the-box activity; it is always a matter of the heart.
The Gospel
It is vital to ground our motives in the gospel (See Understanding the Gospel). We do not extend kindness or labor tirelessly to earn our salvation – Jesus paid that debt completely on the cross, reconciling us to God once and for all. Salvation is an unmerited gift of grace. When we truly grasp this, our good works flow not out of fear, but as the natural fruit of a thankful heart. We serve because He first loved us.
Do Not Give Up
Yet, as we explored in our previous discussion on Today’s Work Gets Eternal Responsibility, our everyday tasks carry far greater weight than we often realize. When we understand that our current faithfulness serves as training for future service in God’s kingdom, even routine efforts gain eternal purpose. But living with this high calling in a broken world takes a genuine toll. Weariness creeps in when our efforts seem unnoticed, when kindness is met with indifference, or when the heavy lifting of love leaves us drained. It is precisely in those moments of burnout that Paul’s words offer a lifeline: do not give up.
Take Heart – He Sees All of Our Efforts
The promise of a harvest is certain, but it operates on a heavenly calendar. “Due season” is God’s divine timing, not our immediate schedule. We often crave instant results, yet the deep work of kingdom-building requires slow, persistent cultivation. The ultimate reward we look forward to in the age to come is not a payment for services rendered, but a gracious gift bestowed by a loving Father who sees every quiet act of obedience.
When the work feels heavy, take heart: your faithfulness today matters, and the eternal harvest is coming, held securely in God’s perfect time.
A Prayer for Endurance
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of salvation, freely given through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus. Help me remember that my security is already anchored in Your grace, so that everything I do springs from a heart of love rather than obligation.
Remind me that the small, faithful choices I make today carry weight in Your kingdom. When the burdens of life weigh heavy and my spirit grows tired, grant me Your strength. Protect me from the temptation to give up when doing good feels difficult and unseen. Shift my eyes away from immediate results and anchor my hope in Your eternal promises.
Teach me to trust Your timing, knowing that You are faithfully at work. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit today, so that I may reflect Your light and persevere until the day of Your harvest.
